A Simpler Time
This assignment was a weekly poem submission we had to do using that week’s formal feature, rhyme and sound. The prompt asked us to try to write a poem in a formal rhyme scheme, such as ABAB or ABBA. For my poem, I chose to write using ABAB and center it around the sticky, nostalgia of a midwestern summer.

A Simpler Time
By Claire McDaniel

In another universe we are young,
Eating ice cream in the early dusk,
Bug-bitten and defiant of bedtimes,
Sharing sticky secrets both small and significant.
Ice cream dripping down,
The sweetness seeping into us and onto our clothes,
Binding us like pleasant paste.
Your watchful eyes wander towards the setting sun,
But I stare at the lightning bugs that sway,
Atop your head like a summer halo.
Like an angel who cascaded down,
The steps of our nostalgic heaven,
Your eternal crown,
Cemented upon your youthful head,
Unweathered and bright
However I age and erode,
But I will always fondly reminisce,
Of the time when we were both just simply,
Seven.
